The disease noticeable in tillering stage. Due to the infection, the lower leaves and stems of the tellers turn yellow.

Later, black lesions are seen penetrating the inner leaf sheath and culm.

When the split open, small mustard like tiny, blackish. sclerotia are seen over the inner surface.
