False smut

  • False smut is visible during panicle initiation phase while high rain fall and high humidity which favours the diseade development.

  • False smut mostly infects during flowering stage.

  • Initially the individual grain of the panicle transforms into yellow orange mor greenish - black coloured mass, later turns into blackish mass which is called as False smut ball.

  • Fungus colonises rice grains, reduces the colour and quality of the grain or seeds.

Management practices


Cultural practices


Collect straw, stubbles and other debris after harvest and burn them along with the syubbles.

Use moderate rates of nitrogen and do not use overdose of fertilizers.

Spray the following fungicides first dose at booting stage and second dose after 10 days.

  • Copper oxychloride (4g/l),

  • Carbendazim (1g/l) and

  • Propiconazole (1 ml/l)
